Mickey Hart, Zakir Hussain reunite for 'Global Drum Project'
It's been 15 years since percussionists Mickey Hart and Zakir Hussain joined together in Planet Drum and collected the first-ever Grammy for Best World Music Album; now, the musicians are teaming again for a new record and tour.
Hart, who spent three decades creating innovative beats for the Grateful Dead, collaborated with Indian tabla virtuoso Hussain on the 1991 self-titled release "Planet Drum." The set reached No. 1 on the Billboard World Music Chart and remained there for 26 weeks. Last year's Planet Drum reunion tour was well received and prompted the idea for another album, according to a press release.
The forthcoming set, "Global Drum Project," is due in stores October 2. It will be supported by a US tour that is scheduled to kick off Sept. 20 in Tucson, AZ. The coast-to-coast trek, which primarily hits college campuses, currently stretches through late October, but more dates are expected. The itinerary is listed below.
As with "Planet Drum," "Global Drum Project" enlists the partnership of Sikuru Adepoju (Nigerian talking drum) and Giovanni Hidalgo (congas), as well as Hussain's brother Taufiq Qureshi (percussion/vocals), Niladari Kumar (sitar) and Dilshad Khan (sarangi). Sampled vocals are provided by the late West African percussionist Olatunji, who also played on "Planet Drum."
In addition to the new album, the Shout! Factory label will reissue a series of Hart catalog titles: "Diga Rhythm Band," "At the Edge," "Mystery Box," and "Supralingua." The albums, which feature a host of guest artists including Hussain and Jerry Garcia, will be available digitally in October and on CD next year.
