Of Montreal maps second US trek this year
Fresh off a major European tour, indie-pop band Of Montreal is making plans for its next US jaunt, which will span more than 30 dates this fall.
The Athens, GA-based group will launch the trek Sept. 28 in Carrboro, NC, and visit cities from coast to coast through mid-November. Two-night stands are planned in Chicago and Los Angeles, and three shows are booked at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall. Experimental hip-hop duo Grand Buffet and indie pop-rockers MGMT appear on most dates. Details are listed below.
Of Montreal will also break away from the continent for a single show Oct. 19 at the Iceland Airwaves Festival in Reykjavik.
The band has been touring relentlessly behind its January release, "Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?," all year long. The album, which is the brainchild of frontman Kevin Barnes, was written during depressing times for the singer and is said to be Of Montreal's darkest and most personal collection of songs to date.
"Hissing Fauna" follows last year's "The Sunlandic Twins" and its download-only remix companion, "The Satanic Twins." The latest record, which is streaming in its entirety at Polyvinyl Records' website, reached No. 2 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart.
Barnes recently told Australian webzine Wireless Bollinger that he's already working on Of Montreal's next album, tentatively titled "Skeletal Lamping."
"I'm stepping away from the pop song template. I am going to create a bunch of 30- to 50-second sections and string them all together," he told the publication. "I don't think there will be any pauses between pieces. I want it to feel like one long piece with hundreds of movements."
Of Montreal, which, legend has it, was named after Barnes' broken romance with a woman from the Canadian city, formed in the late '90s and became part of a second wave of bands to emerge from The Elephant 6 Record Company--a collective of musicians that spawned noted indie bands including Olivia Tremor Control and Neutral Milk Hotel.
