Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello team up for fall tour
Fans seeing Bob Dylan on tour this fall will get to see two Rock and Roll Hall of Famers for the price of one, with Elvis Costello serving as Dylan's opening support on the trek.
With Dylan and his band claiming top billing during the outing--which kicks off Sept. 22 in Duluth, GA--Costello will warm up crowds along the way by playing his first solo shows in 12 years, according to his publicist. Singer/songwriter Amos Lee will offer additional opening support during the tour.
Dylan, minus Costello and Lee, will also tackle a Sept. 16 slot at the Austin City Limits Festival in Austin, TX; a Sept. 19 show in Nashville features Lee but not Elvis. The Costello/Dylan pairing will hit 13 cities in all. Dates are shown below.
Dylan is touring to support the Oct. 1 release of a three-disc, 51-track career retrospective. Simply titled "Dylan," the set will also be made available in a streamlined, 18-song, single-disc version, which will also carry the same title. A deluxe edition will consist of the 3-CD version enclosed in a cloth-covered case, with an extended liner-notes booklet and 10 limited-edition postcards included inside.
Last year, Dylan offered up "Modern Times," his first new studio set since 2001's "Love and Theft." The 2006 disc, which is the folk legend's 44th album, features 10 new Dylan originals he recorded with his touring band: guitarists Stu Kimball and Denny Freeman, multi-instrumentalist Donnie Herron, bassist Tony Garnier and drummer George Recile. Dylan sang and played keyboards, guitars and harmonica.
Costello's most recent release is a collaboration with New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint recorded last June in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. "The River in Reverse"--which comprises seven songs from Toussaint's catalog, the title track by Costello, and five new tunes penned by the two together--earned them a Grammy nomination. The album was followed by the DVD "Hot as a Pistol, Keen as a Blade," which captures a live show from last year's Costello/Toussaint tour.
