East Coast get to Experience Hendrix
The Experience Hendrix Tour is back this fall with a five-date East Coast trek that will feature a host of respected figures in rock and blues paying tribute to the late, great Jimi Hendrix.
The outing, presented by the Hendrix-family-owned Experience Hendrix, LLC, will stop in Washington, DC; New York City; Hampton Beach, NH; Atlantic City, NJ; and Waterbury, CT, Oct. 16-20. Details are listed below.
Artists tapped to perform music written by and associated with Hendrix include blues great Buddy Guy , pedal steel innovator Robert Randolph and contemporary blues guitarists Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd .
Special guests include Doors guitarist Robby Krieger, ex-Rolling Stones guitar vet Mick Taylor and Mississippi-born guitarist Hubert Sumlin, who worked with Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters. Drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Billy Cox, the rhythm section that played behind Hendrix at Woodstock, will also be on hand, as will Double Trouble players Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon, who backed the late Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Cox, whose history with Hendrix dates back to their days in the Army, said it's as big a thrill to play Hendrix's music now as it was in the early '60s.
"The Experience Hendrix Tour just shows you how timeless this music really is," he said in a statement.
Native American band Indigenous, Memphis guitarist Eric Gales and axeman Kenny Olson of Kid Rock's band will also join in on the festivities.
The first Experience Hendrix Tour played to sold-out audiences in San Francisco, Portland and Seattle in 2004, according to a press release. Organizers expect to bring the show to other markets in the future.
"Every day, we see how Jimi's musical legacy continues to transcend generational and cultural boundaries," Experience Hendrix CEO Janie Hendrix said in a statement. "This tour is our way to give live audiences a concert experience that reflects the genius of his unifying spirit."
