Gogol Bordello supports new album with world tour
Gypsy punk-rockers Gogol Bordello have assembled a North American fall tour to support their new album, "Super Taranta."
The band will wrap a West Coast run this weekend, which includes an appearance at Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival, before kicking off the fall outing Oct. 7 in New Haven, CT. The trek is scheduled to visit clubs and theaters from coast to coast, as well as Las Vegas' Vegoose Festival, through early November. After that, Gogol Bordello will take off for a major European tour. North American dates are listed below, while those for the overseas run can be found at the Side One Dummy Records website.
Fans can also catch the band on ABC-TV's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Sept. 4.
Gogol Bordello released "Super Taranta" in July, breaking into The Billboard 200 and reaching No. 15 on the mag's Top Independent Albums chart. The set, which follows 2005's "Gypsy Punks Underdog World Strike," takes the group to the next level, according to bandleader Eugene Hutz, who is a Chernobyl survivor from the Ukraine.
"It's more direct, more abstract, more focused, with more dark humor," he said in the band's bio. "The dub parts are deeper, the fast parts are faster; it's pure orgasmo hysteria."
The record was produced by Victor Van Vugt (Nick Cave, PJ Harvey) at his old-school analog studio in New York. As with all Gogol Bordello albums, it was cut live in the studio with minimal overdubs.
"The people in the band bounce energy off each other and that's what we capture on the record," Hutz explained.
A few songs from "Super Taranta" are streaming at Gogol Bordello's MySpace page.
The eight-member band's sound is described in its bio as "supercharged music based on a brutal gypsy two-step rhythm that sounds like an Eastern European cousin of ska, augmented by punk, metal, rap, flamenco, roots reggae, Italian spaghetti, Western twang, dub and other sounds generated by gypsies and rebels from across the globe."
The multi-ethnic group, which is based in New York City, has become known for the circus-like atmosphere of its high-energy shows, which have sold out in major cities worldwide, according to a press release.
