Blind Melon taps new singer, plots comeback
Alt-rockers Blind Melon return to the road this fall with a new album in the works as the band continues its rebirth after a decade of downtime following the 1995 death of singer Shannon Hoon.
The Los Angeles-based group surprised its fans last fall when it announced that it would resume touring and recording under the Blind Melon moniker, with Texas-bred singer Travis Warren filling the spot left by Hoon, who died of a drug overdose as the band was cresting its initial wave of popularity in the '90s.
The band's current outing kicks off Oct. 7 in Providence, RI, with 10 cities set for the comeback trek, which is expected to grow as the tour grows closer. All of the group's confirmed dates are included below.
The group is currently shopping for a record label and a release date for the still-untitled follow-up to 1995's "Soup."
"We've mixed seven songs and have maybe 12-13 to go," guitarist Rogers Stevens wrote of the album's progress on the band's MySpace blog in July. Several of the group's new songs are streaming at Blind Melon 's MySpace page.
The band's original record label, Capitol, issued "Live at the Palace" last year, sparking a resurgence of interest in the group. The album documents a 1995 concert in Los Angeles recorded just 10 days before Hoon's passing.
