Mountain Goats prep new album, map late year plans

Prolific indie rockers The Mountain Goats launch another assault on American audiences this fall with a headlining tour and word from the recording studio of the duo's next album.

The pair--singer/guitarist John Darnielle and bassist Peter Hughes--will kick things off Sept. 20 in Washington, DC. The 19-city trek will wind through the late-fall months and into winter, coming to a close with a mid-November show in Chicago. All of the group's dates are included below.

Southern indie pop act Bowerbirds will open for the Goats on the tour's first leg, which runs through the band's Oct. 2 appearance in Brooklyn.

"There will be one more US tour later in the year, and then an album in the spring," Darnielle posted in July on the band's website. "We have something like six states left to play until we'll be able to say that we have rocked out in all 50 states."

The duo also announced on its site that it would record its promised new release this fall at Northern California's Prairie Sun recording studio, with singer/songwriter/producer John Vanderslice and Scott Solter (Spoon, Okkervil River) behind the controls.

The band's most recent album, last year's "Get Lonely," was also produced by Solter. The set followed 2005's Vanderslice-produced "The Sunset Tree."
