Willie Nelson gets back on track
Several Willie Nelson concerts scheduled for this month were called off briefly, but now are back on as the country music icon recovers from a reported bout of exhaustion.
Shows beginning this week in Lake Ozark, MO; La Salle, IL; Sioux City, IA; and Rapid City, SD will go forward, according to Nelson's publicist. However, the performer's planned Sept. 23 gig at Bayfield, WI's Big Top Chautauqua is currently off the books, but may be reinstated, as well. Nelson's current itinerary, which is listed below, takes him across the US into early November.
Nelson was apparently exhausted after all the work he put into the Sept. 9 Farm Aid concert in New York City. But after vacationing in Hawaii, he felt refreshed and decided he couldn't disappoint his fans, concert promoter Dave Bernstein told the Des Moines Register.
The 74-year-old performer has been tearing up the road all year, supporting several releases. In the spring, Nelson toured with Merle Haggard and Ray Price behind the album "Last of the Breed," which brought the three Country Music Hall of Famers together in the studio for the first time.
Last year, Nelson put out three albums: the Ryan Adams-produced "Songbird," which includes covers, Nelson classics and two new originals; "The Great American Songbook," a collection of standards; and "You Don't Know Me: The Songs of Cindy Walker."
The Red-Headed Stranger is also keeping busy with a slew of other projects, the latest of which are reported to be a movie role in the political comedy "Swing Vote" and a commission to write material for Jessica Simpson's country album.
Meanwhile, Nelson will be honored in early November as a BMI Icon at the performing-rights organization's annual country awards ceremony.
