Joanna Newsom to lead orchestra in six cities
Songstress Joanna Newsom will play a few special dates this fall, leading a 29-piece orchestra through her songs in six cities around the country.
Newsom--who, in addition to singing and songwriting, is an accomplished harpist, pianist and harpsichordist--will borrow pieces of local orchestras in each city she visits during the outing, which kicks off Oct. 21 in Milwaukee. The trek also includes visits to Atlanta, Los Angeles, Seattle and Austin, TX, as well as a Nov. 4 appearance in Grass Valley, CA, near the singer's hometown of Nevada City. Dates are listed below.
The California-born Newsom is backing last year's critically acclaimed "Ys," as well as a more recent EP she put together last winter after cancelling three consecutive shows due to vocal cord problems at the end of a seven-week US tour.
Released in April, the three-song "Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band" EP was recorded and mixed in three days and contains one previously unreleased song, "Colleen," and new arrangements of two previously-released songs, "Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie" from The Milk-Eyed Mender and "Cosmia" from "Ys."
Newsom is backed on the EP by her usual touring outfit of Kevin Barker, Neal Morgan, Dan Cantrell and Ryan Francesconi.
