Yo La Tengo lets loose on 'Freewheeling' tour

Indie-rock trio Yo La Tengo will take a mostly acoustic show on the road this fall, hitting colleges, museums and cafes with a format the band calls "more intimate and interactive."

The "Freewheeling Yo La Tengo Tour" will feature the group telling stories and answering questions from the audience, ala VH1's "Storytellers," in between offering an "almost-acoustic" set of songs from throughout the band's 23-year career, according to a press release.

The outing, which finds the New Jersey trio still backing last year's studio release "I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass," kicks off Oct. 9 at Pittsburgh's Warhol Museum, with the band playing two shows. The 15-city trek wanders through mid-November, with the group playing several non-"Freewheeling" shows along the trip, including a Nov. 11 date in Ithaca, NY, with Broken Social Scene. All of the group's upcoming dates are shown below.

The band is scheduled to appear tomorrow night (9/29) in Los Angeles for a Hollywood Bowl gala supporting Bright Eyes' appearance in front of the LA Philharmonic orchestra, with singer/songwriter M. Ward rounding out the bill.

"I Am Not Afraid of You," which hit stores last September, is the band's 12th studio album and first full-length collection of new material since 2003's "Summer Sun."

Free downloads of two songs from the new album--"Pass the Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind" and "Beanbag Chair"--are available at the band's website.

Last year, the group also released "Yo La Tengo is Murdering the Classics," which features live performances that the group recorded during its 1996-2003 annual fundraising appearances at New York independent radio station WFMU.
