Spice Girls sell out UK show in seconds
The Spice Girls reunion/farewell tour is off to a rousing start, with their London O2 arena show reportedly selling out in a matter of seconds.
More than 1 million people registered to buy tickets to the Dec. 15 concert, which sold out in 38 seconds, according to BBC News. Three more London shows have since been added and tickets for the original performance are already appearing on eBay, with one pair advertised for 900 pounds (about $1,837 US), the broadcaster said.
The world tour is set to kick off on North American shores with a Dec. 2 show in Vancouver. So far, the Spice Girls are scheduled to play four US cities, including a two-night stand at Los Angeles' Staples Center and gigs in Las Vegas, New York and San Jose, CA. Details are listed below.
Presale tickets for the North American dates went on sale yesterday (10/1). Fans must first register at the Girls' website, where a previous posting said, "To make it fair, we will randomly pick who gets to buy tickets."
Following the stateside shows, the group will move on to London, Cologne, Madrid, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Sydney, Cape Town and Buenos Aires through late January. Information about overseas dates can be found at the Spice Girls website.
In conjunction with the tour, the ladies are expected to release a greatest-hits album next month. Various reports claim U2 frontman Bono is working with them on a new song.
The reunion brings all the Girls, who now have seven children between them, back together for the first time in six years. Geri "Ginger" Halliwell left the group in 1998 and the remaining members--Victoria "Posh" Beckham, Melanie "Sporty" Chisholm, Emma "Baby" Bunton and Melanie "Scary" Brown--parted ways in 2001.
The Spice Girls, who burst onto the scene in the mid-'90s, topped the charts with the song "Wannabe" and went on to sell 55 million albums, according to reports.
