Umphrey's McGee jams behind live album
Jam band Umphrey's McGee hit the road earlier this week to support its first official live album, "Live at the Murat."
The sextet continues its US trek tonight (10/18) in Johnson City, NY. Two-night stands are booked this month in New York City and Burlington, VT, and Umphrey's McGee will also play two shows at Las Vegas' Vegoose Music Festival. The group will wrap 2007 with three nights in its hometown of Chicago, culminating with a 10-year anniversary celebration on New Year's Eve. Details are listed below.
Before the year is over, Umphrey's plans to visit Jamaica for the Dec. 13-17 Caribbean Holidaze event, in which the band will join The Disco Biscuits and special guests for performances at a couple of all-inclusive resorts on the North Coast. Information is available at Umphrey's McGee 's website. The band is also looking ahead to March 2008, when it will head to Amsterdam for the "Jam in the Dam" festival.
Earlier this week, the Jammy Award-winning group released "Live at the Murat," which was recorded at the Indianapolis venue in April. The two-disc set, produced by the band's longtime sound engineer, Kevin Browning, features fan favorites like "Push the Pig," "The Triple Wide" and "In the Kitchen," along with rare tunes including "Padgett's Profile." A few songs from the record are streaming at Umphrey's McGee's MySpace page.
The live album follows UM's 2006 studio release, "Safety In Numbers," which was followed in April by the sequel, "The Bottom Half." The latter set includes two discs--the first comprising 10 recordings that didn't make it onto "Safety In Numbers," and the second featuring more than two dozen outtakes, alternative versions, dialog, a cappella recordings and other material designed to give fans a sneak peek into the band's creative process.
Umphrey's McGee supported those albums in the spring with a tour that visited more than US 30 cities. The band usually logs about 120 gigs a year, according to a press release.
