Pink Martini looks toward 2008
Multilingual, 12-piece ensemble Pink Martini is already putting together dates for a 2008 North American tour.
The genre-bending group is currently in Europe through mid-November and will do an Australian run in January before returning to the States. Pink Martini will start its US trek with Jan. 18-19 shows in Oklahoma City followed by a three-night stand in Washington, DC. The band will stick to the East in March and then head for the West Coast in May. North American dates are listed below while overseas shows can be found at the group's website.
Pink Martini, which finished a major North American tour last month, continues to support its third album, "Hey Eugene!" The May release comprises 12 songs sung in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese, and also includes the band's first foray into the Arabic language.
"Hey Eugene!" dives into many of the musical styles that Pink Martini is known for: pop, swing, cabaret, Latin-rhythms and romantic, old-Hollywood-style ballads. A couple of songs, including the title track, are streaming at Pink Martini's MySpace page.
The Portland, OR-based group was founded in 1994 by classically trained pianist Thomas Lauderdale. A year later, the Harvard grad recruited his classmate, vocalist China Forbes, and the ensemble eventually grew from a quintet to a 12- piece.
The group made its orchestral debut with the Oregon Symphony in 1998 and has since performed its diverse repertoire with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, Canada and the US, according to its website.
With its first two albums, 1997's "Sympathique" and 2004's "Hang on Little Tomato," Pink Martini built a cult following, selling 1.3 million albums worldwide on its own independent Heinz Records label, according to a press release.
