She Wants Revenge vows to stick around
"I think we learned that you should always remain humble," Bravin said during an interview with LiveDaily.
According to Bravin, Warfield has known Depeche Mode's keyboardist/guitarist/vocalist Martin Gore for several years. So it was particularly nice for Bravin to meet the rest of the band, which also includes singer Dave Gahan and keyboardist Andrew Fletcher.
"We also learned not to take it all too seriously; take it with a grain of salt," Bravin said. "You do what you love. Not many people can really say that they get to go out every day and do what they love to do. We're really fortunate to be able to do that."
Right now, She Wants Revenge is loving touring in support of its sophomore effort, "This is Forever." The jaunt, which features a touring guitarist and drummer, began before the album hit stores Oct. 9, however, fans were receptive to the new material, which includes the singles "True Romance" and "Written in Blood." Bravin explained the album's title reflects his and Warfield's feelings toward their band.
"This is something we really believe in," he said. We're not one of those bands that are going to come and go. I think we're going to stick around for a long time. I think that's what we wanted to say with the title of the record."
Bravin and Warfield have known each other since the 1980s when both were young, yet already dabbling in music. The two vowed they would collaborate, but it never occurred until they were working together on an album by hip-hop-influenced alternative singer Kenna.
"We didn't really decide to form a band. It just happened by accident," Bravin said. "We met when we were kids and we tried to work together on and off over the years. But he was always doing something else and I was doing something else.
"It wasn't until three years ago that a mutual friend of ours [Kenna] got us together. We started working on hip-hop beats, basically. After working on beats for about three or four months, [Kenna], who's actually one of the bands that's out on tour with us, asked me to do a beat for what would be his second record. So, I did a beat for Kenna that was a lot different than the stuff Justin and I were working on. We were working on beats for other people. We weren't really thinking about doing a project ourselves. I did a beat for Kenna, I played it for him on the phone and he freaked out. He wanted me to e-mail it to him so he could start writing. But then Justin came over that day and heard it. He let me know at that point that he wanted me to hold off on sending it to Kenna because he wanted to try singing on it and maybe playing some guitar [on it], which he did. That would become his first song. [It is] indirectly thanks to Kenna that it all happened."
The sexually tinged "Tear You Apart" was one of the first songs that Bravin and Warfield wrote together. When the two finished the song, Bravin had no idea it would put them on the musical map.
"That song wasn’t even supposed to be on the record. It was a really last-minute thing," Bravin said.
"It was one of the first songs that we ever did. I think we had just heard it so many times that we were just sick of it. We had heard so many songs since we did that, that we were really excited about the [newer songs]."
Bravin and Warfield never imagined "Tear You Apart" as a single. She Wants Revenge owes a friend/DJ on Sirius satellite radio a ton of thanks for playing the song. Bravin explained the only reason why their friend played it on Sirius was because of the expletives in the song. Satellite radio doesn't follow the same FCC rules and regulations as terrestrial radio. Then the song "took off."
Bravin admitted "This is Forever" is a much darker record than She Wants Revenge's self-titled debut. But it is just as danceable.
"First and foremost, we tend to create dance music, so it's always going to be danceable. That was our mission--to kind of start out with a dance skeleton and then add little bits and pieces of what we consider to be dark music. In our opinion, it's darker, but it's also kind of poppier."
