Blind Melon continues comeback tour
Alt-rockers Blind Melon , who returned to the road last month for the first time in a dozen years, have added a handful of East Coast dates to their schedule.
The band will continue its tour Nov. 27 in Ridgewood, NJ, and play cities in Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida into December. Details are listed below.
Blind Melon disbanded in 1995 after lead singer Shannon Hoon died of a drug overdose. The band surprised fans last fall when it announced that original members Glen Graham, Roger Stevens, Christopher Thorn and Brad Smith were regrouping with Texas-bred singer Travis Warren.
"Enough time has passed to honor and solidify the songs," bassist/vocalist Smith recently told the Toledo Free Press. "We couldn't have done it until now, but there's been enough healing in my heart and mind now. There's a percentage of people out there (upset) that we're carrying on without Shannon. Once they hear us play the old songs live, it will make sense to them."
In addition to the old songs, Blind Melon is previewing new material from its forthcoming album, which is due early next year. Several of the tunes are streaming at the band's MySpace page.
Blind Melon's 1992 self-titled debut went quadruple platinum on the strength of the hit single "No Rain." The band's sophomore set, "Soup," surfaced in August 1995, a couple of months before Hoon was found dead of a cocaine overdose on the group's tour bus. The following year, Blind Melon released "Nico," named after Hoon's infant daughter. The set included some rough tracks for which Hoon had finished the vocals, according to the band's bio.
During last month's inaugural run of comeback shows, Nico Blue Hoon joined the band in Chicago for a couple of songs and Shannon Hoon's mother, Nel, made pronouncements from the stage, voicing her support for the band. Videos of the performance are streaming at YouTube's website.
