Juan Luis Guerra sweeps Latin Grammys
Dominican star Juan Luis Guerra hit the jackpot at this year's Latin Grammys ceremony, which took place last night (11/8) in Las Vegas.
Guerra took home trophies in all five of the categories for which he was nominated: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Merengue Album and Best Tropical Song for "La Llave De Mi Corazon."
The night before, Guerra was also honored as the 2007 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year for his artistic and humanitarian accomplishments.
Ricky Martin, who opened the Latin Grammys show with a little help from Blue Man Group , walked away with two trophies: Best Male Pop Vocal Album for "MTV Unplugged" and Best Long Form Music Video.
Last year's Best New Artist, Puerto Rican reggaeton group Calle 13 , continued its winning streak, scoring Best Urban Music Album for "Residente O Visitante" and Best Urban Song for "Pal Norte," which the band recorded with Cuban hip-hoppers Orishas.
Two trophies were also handed to Caetano Veloso , who won in the Best Singer-Songwriter Album category for "Ce," and the Best Brazilian Song category for "Nao Me Arrependo."
This year's Best New Artist award went to Mexican pop/rock, brother/sister duo Jesse y Joy, who released their debut album, "Esta Es Mi Vida," in March.
Performers at the glitzy ceremony, which was held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, included Daddy Yankee , Miguel Bose , Pepe Aguilar , Conjunto Primavera , Aleks Syntek , La Quinta Estacion, Bimba Bose, Calle 13, Intocable, Ivy Queen, La Quinta Estacion, Orishas and Camila.
The show, hosted by actress/singer Lucero and actor/comedian Eugenio Derbez, aired live on the Univision Network.
