Phil Lesh & Friends book short West Coast run
Phil Lesh & Friends will roll out the jams in late January, as they've been tapped for a few special shows on the West Coast.
They'll take the stage at San Francisco's Fillmore Jan. 25 for Phat Phriday, which is a benefit concert for Habitat for Humanity, and will hang around the City by the Bay the next night to play Mardi Gras Ball, which will also feature Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. Lesh & Friends will then head to Oregon for a two-night stand in Portland. Details are listed below.
The group has also been confirmed for the sixth annual Langerado Music Festival near Ft. Lauderdale, FL, March 9. The four-day event, headlined by R.E.M. and Beastie Boys, will take place at Big Cypress Indian Reservation.
On his upcoming trip, Lesh's ever-changing lineup of "Friends" will include singer/songwriter Jackie Green, guitarist Larry Campbell, keyboardist Steve Molitz and drummer John Molo. The same group of musicians hit the road for a coast-to-coast fall tour, which wrapped last month with a nine-show residency at New York City's Nokia Theatre Times Square.
Lesh, a pioneering bassist who played with the Grateful Dead for three decades, released several live albums last year, including "Live at the Warfield." The musician recorded the CD/DVD set during a two-night stand in San Francisco with singer Joan Osborne, guitarists Campbell and John Scofield, saxophonist Greg Osby, keyboardist Rob Barraco and Molo on drums. A few tracks from the record are streaming at Lesh & Friends' MySpace page.
Since Jerry Garcia's death in 1995, Lesh has joined Grateful Dead bandmates Bob Weir and Mickey Hart in the Other Ones and The Dead, in addition to launching a solo career. He's put out one studio album since his days with the legendary jam band: 2002's "There and Back Again."
