George Jones In Critical Condition Following Car Accident
Country music icon George Jones was reportedly in critical condition following an auto accident near his home in Tennessee on Saturday (3/6). Local and national news sources reported that Jones had been driving alone without a seat belt when he lost control of his Lexus SUV while rounding a curve. The vehicle slammed into a bridge abutment. An emergency rescue team reportedly spent two hours extricating Jones from the wreckage.
Jones was rushed by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, where doctors placed him on a ventilator. The 67-year-old country music legend suffered a collapsed lung and a ruptured liver in the accident, according to an AP report.
Doctors at the hospital told reporters that Jones arrived unconscious and was being kept unconscious with medication to allow his injuries to begin healing without complications from pain. Jones is expected to remain in critical condition for at least two days while doctors assess his body's reaction to his injuries.
The country crooner, nicknamed ''The Possum,'' had been on track for a busy year, hosting his own series, The George Jones Show, on country lifestyle channel TNN as well as recording the first album under his new label deal with Asylum Records. Additionally, a tour schedule of 52 shows was set to kick off March 12th in Jim Thorpe, PA. The tour, routed loosely to allow Jones time at home each month, was to run through October.
