Big Head Todd & The Monsters expand US tour
The Denver-based band is set to finish this year with a set of shows in Sparks, NV, before kicking off 2008 tour dates Jan. 8 in Columbia, MO. Since last check, Big Head Todd has added 20 more club/theater gigs across the US through April, including two-night stands in Chicago and Los Angeles. The tour is expected to grow to 60 dates, according to a press release. The group has also booked June 7 for its annual hometown benefit concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater. Confirmed shows are listed below.
In addition to touring, Big Head Todd & The Monsters are working on building their fan base by giving away free copies of their new album, "All The Love You Need." The band has teamed with several radio stations, who are mailing nearly half a million copies of the CD to listeners nationwide, according to a press release. The set is also available for free download at the band's website.
"We see the record as our main marketing tool," singer/guitarist Todd Park Mohr told the Denver Post. "It's no longer a source of income--not that it ever has been for me, given the way major labels work."
"All The Love You Need" is Big Head Todd's eighth studio album and first since 2004's "Crimes of Passion." The set, produced by David Bianco (Tom Petty, Mick Jagger) features the tune "Blue Sky," which the band wrote for the members of the Space Shuttle Discovery for their 2005 mission. More recently, "Blue Sky" was chosen by Hillary Clinton as a campaign theme song, according to various reports.
Since parting ways with the major-label machine, Big Head Todd & The Monsters have tapped into digital distribution, delivering new music to fans via free, monthly podcast files posted at their website.
Earlier this year, the band gave fans a glimpse into its past with "From the Archives - Volume 1," a collection of demos and archived material from its earliest days.
The original members of BHTM have been together since the mid-80s. Their first major-label release, 1993's "Sister Sweetly," scored platinum status and spawned Top 10 rock radio hits including "Broken Hearted Savior," "Circle" and "Bittersweet."
