Gogol Bordello stomps around the world this spring
Gypsy punk-rockers Gogol Bordello continue to spread their musical madness far and wide as they gear up for another tour of North America and Europe.
The "Forces of Victory Tour" will launch March 1 in Philadelphia and stop by clubs and theaters across the US--along with a stop in Toronto--through mid-month. Gogol Bordello will also jet to Europe in late March for a four-week run and then return stateside for an April 27 appearance at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, CA. The band's North American dates are detailed below and its overseas gigs are listed at its MySpace page.
Gogol Bordello is supporting its July release, "Super Taranta!," which broke into The Billboard 200 and reached No. 15 on the magazine's Top Independent Albums chart. The set came in at No. 14 on Rolling Stone's "Top 50 Albums of 2007" and the tune "Ultimate" made it into the mag's "100 Best Songs of 2007."
"Super Taranta!" was produced by Victor Van Vugt (Nick Cave, PJ Harvey) at his old-school analog studio in New York and, as with all Gogol Bordello albums, it was cut live in the studio with minimal overdubs.
"The people in the band bounce energy off each other and that's what we capture on the record," Ukrainian-born frontman Eugene Hutz said in a statement.
A few songs from the set are streaming at Gogol Bordello's MySpace page.
The eight-member band's sound is described in its bio as "supercharged music based on a brutal gypsy two-step rhythm that sounds like an Eastern European cousin of ska, augmented by punk, metal, rap, flamenco, roots reggae, Italian spaghetti, Western twang, dub and other sounds generated by gypsies and rebels from across the globe."
The multi-ethnic group, based in New York City, has become known for the circus-like atmosphere of its high-energy shows, which have sold out in major cities worldwide, according to a press release.
Gogol Bordello will also get some face time on the big screen, as the band plays a part in the upcoming film "Filth and Wisdom," which marks Madonna's directorial debut, according to reports. Hutz, who starred in 2005's "Everything is Illuminated" alongside Elijah Wood, will play the lead role in "Filth and Wisdom," and he recently told Glide Magazine that Gogol Bordello has several songs on the film's soundtrack.
