Cobra Starship gets help from label 'family'

For the pop band Cobra Starship , being signed to Fueled by Raman/Decaydance Records is like being a part of a rock 'n' roll family.

Members of labelmates Gym Class Heroes, Fall Out Boy and The Academy Is… appeared in the video for Cobra Starship's 2006 song "Bring It (Snakes on a Plane)," and, most recently, Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump produced Cobra Starship's sophomore effort, "Viva La Cobra," which debuted at No. 80 on The Billboard 200 album chart.

"The master plan behind Fueled by Raman/Decaydance Records is: everyone is remembering the people who helped them," said guitarist Ryland Blackinton in an interview with LiveDaily. "Everybody has everybody else's back. It's a family like that. It's very good. Plus, we're all under the same management. We were very lucky."

Cobra Starship--which also includes vocalist Gabe Saporta, bassist Alex Suarez, keytarist Victoria Asher and drummer Nate Novarro--is on its debut headlining tour in support of "Viva La Cobra." Opening acts include Metro Station, We the Kings and The Cab. The itinerary is listed below.

Stump's production work on "Viva La Cobra" stemmed partly from the convenience of his band and Cobra Starship touring together on last year's Honda Civic Tour.

"A lot of the venues were amphitheaters ...," Blackinton said. "They're in really remote areas, so there's not much to do. We would hang out on our buses and we would just sort of pass ideas back and forth to one another. By the end of the tour, we had enough songs to go into the studio. We went in the studio for 26 days and that's how it went. Patrick was great. He's a very talented person."

Blackinton explained that the producer essentially became a member of the band during the recording process.

"He did quite a bit and he really got involved in it. I've never worked with a 'producer-producer.' They've always been musicians. It seems better to have a musician."

"Viva La Cobra" marks the first time the band members collaborated on an album. Cobra Starship's debut, "While the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets," was mostly singer Saporta's work.

"We came in at the very end of the recording process [for "While the City Sleeps…"]. There was maybe a week remaining. Alex and I and Nate came in and did a couple of tracks, just so Gabe could put our names on the liner notes.

"For this record, we were all involved and that was great. We were given a lot of freedom It was amazing. It was great."
