Billy Joel expands spring schedule
Concert dates continue to trickle in for Billy Joel , who recently announced he will be the final musical artist to perform at New York City's Shea Stadium before it closes its doors this year.
The iconic singer/songwriter kicked off his 2008 tour schedule last month, performing with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and will continue with late February shows in Northern and Southern California and Denver, as well as a March gig in Milwaukee. Since last check, Joel has added a few cities to his April itinerary: Pittsburgh, Montreal and New Orleans, where he'll make his first appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Details are listed below.
The native New Yorker's July 16 performance at Shea Stadium will make him the first artist in music history to have played all four of the Big Apple's marquee sporting venues: Shea Stadium, Yankee Stadium, Giants Stadium and Madison Square Garden, according to a press release.
"As a sports fan and a music lover, I will always have a place for Shea Stadium in my heart," Joel said in a statement. "I thank the Mets for giving me and my fans a chance to rock Shea Stadium one last time for the ages."
The facility, which made music history with the 1965 Beatles concert, is set to close following this year's baseball season.
Joel's latest album release is 2006's "12 Gardens Live"--a double-CD set featuring performances from his record-breaking 12-night stand at Madison Square Garden that April. The year prior, he put out the five-disc, career-spanning box-set "My Lives."
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said he was finished writing pop songs following 1993's "River of Dreams," but he returned to the genre last year, issuing a single titled "All My Life" as an anniversary present for his wife. He followed that by penning the anti-war pop song "Christmas in Fallujah," which was recorded by emerging singer/songwriter Cass Dillon.
Joel has racked up six Grammy Awards and sold more than 100 million records over the past quarter century, according to his website. His "Greatest Hits Volume I and II" has moved more than 20 million copies alone, making it the best-selling hits album by a male artist.
