Radiohead confirms first leg of US tour

With its new album, "In Rainbows," continuing to soar on charts around the world, Radiohead has confirmed dates and venues for the first leg of its 2008 North American tour.

The band, which had released a list of destinations for the coming trek last month, will kick off the eight-city first leg May 5 in West Palm Beach, FL. Pre-sales for the announced dates will begin Thursday (2/14) through the band's merchandising website, with sales to the general public beginning Feb. 16.

The second half of Radiohead's North American tour, with shows on both the East and West Coast, will take place after the band's summer trek trough the UK and Europe, according to the group's publicist.

Radiohead continues to celebrate a No. 1 debut for "In Rainbows" on The Billboard 200 album chart, with the retail version of the disc--which hit stores Jan. 1--moving 122,000 copies during its first week out, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The disc topped the charts in several countries around the world, including the US and the UK, and spawned a rare hit single for the album-oriented group, with "Bodysnatchers" reaching No. 9 on Billboard's US Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart.

"In Rainbows" was famously made available to fans last fall on a "pay what you like" basis, with Billboard estimating 1.2 million downloads of the digital album during its first day of its release. The band hasn't made public the actual number of downloads, nor the amount of money fans paid.

"It was an experiment that felt worth trying...[and] it's fun to make people stop for a few seconds and think about what music is worth," guitarist Jonny Greenwood told Rolling Stone magazine in October.
