Clay Walker still thriving after MS diagnosis
Country singer Clay Walker 's 1996 diagnosis of multiple sclerosis made him realize what's important in life.
"It definitely has a big reflection in the songs I write," Walker said. "It also has a lot to do with how I live every day."
For example, in 1999, he released the title track to "Live, Laugh, Love" and never realized how important that song was going to become.
"It's really become my theme song," Walker said. "You have to live, laugh and love no matter what's going on in your life. It's not that you ignore or go into denial about MS, but you have to make a conscious choice what your attitude is going to be. I've maintained a good attitude all the way through this. There are days where I know that I've got MS. And there's other days where I go, 'Wow, maybe they misdiagnosed me.'"
MS is a disease that affects the central nervous system--the brain and spinal cord. It can cause problems with muscle control and strength, vision, balance, feeling and thinking. Walker, who's in remission, has what's called relapsing-remitting MS. According to WebMD, relapsing-remitting MS symptoms may fade and then recur at random for many years. The disease does not advance during the remissions. Walker, who takes Copaxone for MS, has been in remission for 11 years.
"I don't have the fatigue I heard a lot of other people talk about, other than when I was taking interferon for the first year I had MS," Walker said. "Then I got off of that and I didn't feel the fatigue anymore. The regimen I have is, I do a little bit of exercise, moderate exercise, either riding the bike or getting on the elliptical. And pretty much take the medication, it's a daily injection."
Walker is speaking about his disease in recognition of March's Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month.
"I’m just trying to do everything I can to create awareness as well as help other people who are living with the disease realize they can have a full life and they can reclaim a lot of what MS has taken from them," Walker explained.
"Without people raising awareness, without people getting in the public eye, less people will hear about it. I feel that's something that I can do: Get out there and let people know there's something you can do for it. You don't have to sit on the sidelines or wait for a cure. There is something you can do in the meantime until we have a cure. There is a way you could take care of yourself and control and manage the disease."
Having MS hasn't stopped Walker from pursuing his career. Last April, he released his 10th album, "Fall." The first single, "'Fore She Was Mama," peaked at No. 21 in March 2007. Also included on "Fall" is a cover of Freddy Fender's hit song "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" and Walker's third single, "She Likes It In The Morning."
"MS hasn't changed my touring or my outlook on my career," Walker said. "I've always been a person who tries to get better every time I walk on stage. That hasn't changed. As far as the amount of shows, that hasn't changed it either."
Walker contends 2008 is going to be a "pretty strenuous" year for him.
"'Fall' was a huge hit for us. I think people are going to want to see us and ticket sales are already going up. As long as people want to hear us---and I feel like they do--we're going to get out and give it to them."
