Eminem’s "Marshall Mathers LP" Joins RIAA’s Rap Elite
Eminem ’s “The Marshall Mathers LP” has been certified at five-times platinum in its first month of release, leading the list of notables among the Recording Industry Association’s gold and platinum certifications for June. Only one hip-hop album--The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Life After Death”--has gotten off to a faster start, though two 2 Pac albums were also certified at five times platinum during their initial audit month.
Dr. Dre ’s “Dr. Dre-2001” was certified at the five-million mark in June, making it the rapper-producer’s best-selling album to date. It surpassed his triple-platinum 1992 album “The Chronic.”
Britney Spears ’ “Oops!… I Did It Again” tied the record for the fastest sales start by a female solo artist, gaining RIAA certification for four million albums sold. Mariah Carey hit the same mark in 1995 with “Daydream,” and Celine Dion accomplished the feat twice, with “Let’s Talk About Love” in 1998 and “All the Way…A Decade of Song” in 1999.
“Mad Season” by matchbox twenty has been certified double-platinum, marking the second consecutive multi-platinum album by the pop-rockers. “Yourself or Someone Like You” is certified 11 times platinum.
Among the month’s other certifications were two Jeff Beck albums from the late ‘60s: “Truth” and “Beck-Ola,” both of which passed the 500,000 sales mark to earn gold status from the RIAA.
In all, the RIAA awarded 12 multi-platinum, 13 platinum and 21 gold albums in June. A complete listing is available at the official RIAA website.
