M.I.A. lines up American trek
She'll sandwich US and Canadian club and theater shows in between performances at late-April's Coachella Festival in Indio, CA, and mid-June's Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester, TN. M.I.A. will also make a May 24 appearance at the Sasquatch! Music Festival in George, WA. Details are listed below.
The politically charged, genre-bending artist--known for her danceable mix of electronic, hip-hop and dancehall music--continues to support her sophomore release, "Kala," which surfaced last fall and reached No. 18 on The Billboard 200 and No. 8 on the Top Rap Albums chart. The set also topped the magazine's Electronic Albums chart and remains in the Top 10 after 31 weeks.
M.I.A.'s latest single, "Paper Planes," is currently making waves on singles sales charts, and can be heard at her MySpace page.
The songs on "Kala" get their international flavor from writing and recording sessions that took place in India, Jamaica, Trinidad, Australia, London, New York and Baltimore. Guest artists on the album include Nigerian rapper Afrikan Boy, a group of Aborigine adolescents called The Wilcannia Mob, and Timbaland. DJs Switch and Diplo lent a hand in the production booth.
The new record follows M.I.A.'s 2005 debut, "Arular," which was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. On that set, the performer, who is the daughter of Sri Lankan refugees, raps about politics and her early life split between her war-torn country and London's council estates.
