Velvet Revolver, Scott Weiland split
In a press release issued yesterday (4/1), Velvet Revolver co-founders Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum (all former members of Guns N' Roses), along with fellow co-founding VR guitarist Dave Kushner, announced that they were "parting ways with singer Scott Weiland."
"This band is all about its fans and its music and Scott Weiland isn't 100% committed to either," Slash said in a prepared statement. "Among other things, his increasingly erratic on-stage behavior and personal problems have forced us to move on."
Weiland--who had been engaged in a public feud with Sorum during recent weeks--today (4/2) responded to VR's announcement with a press release of his own.
"After reading the comment by Duff, Matt, Dave and the illustrious 'GUITAR HERO,' Saul Hudson, a.k.a Slash, I find it humorous that the so-called four 'founding members' of Velvet Revolver, better known to themselves as 'the Project' before I officially named the band, would decide to move on without me after I had already claimed the group dead in the water on March 20 in Glasgow."
While on stage during that show, the singer reportedly said that Velvet Revolver's then-in-progress tour would be his last with the group.
"In response to Slash's comment regarding my commitment, I have to say it is a blatant and tired excuse to cover up the truth," Weiland continued. "The truth of the matter is that the band had not gotten along on multiple levels for some time. On a musical level, there were moments of joy, inspiration, fun ... at times, but let's not forget the multiple trips to rehab every member of the band had taken (with the exception of one member, no need to mention his name)."
Weiland--who has been in and out of rehab a number of times, and also served a jail stint following multiple drug-related arrests--went on to reference Stone Temple Pilots' recently announced plans for a reunion tour this summer, which will be the group's first outing since its 2002 breakup.
"Personally speaking, I choose to look forward to the future and performing with a group of friends I have known my entire life, people who have always had my back," he said. "This also speaks to my commitment to my music and my fellow band mates in STP and to the fans who I feel would much rather watch a group of musicians who enjoy being together as opposed to a handful of discontents who at one time used to call themselves a gang."
Weiland closed his message with the cryptic statement "don't be fooled by veiled trickery," and offered a suggestion to his now-former bandmates in Velvet Revolver, who reportedly plan to forge on with a yet-to-be-determined vocalist.
"Good hunting lads," Weiland wrote. "I think Sebastian Bach would be a fantastic choice."
Slash, McKagan, Sorum and Kushner joined forces back in 2003, and spent months searching for a singer. The auditioning process was documented in the 2004 VH1 special "Inside Out: The Rise of Velvet Revolver." The group ultimately recruited Weiland and went on to release two albums: 2004's "Contraband" and last year's "Libertad."
