Dresden Dolls plot spring run behind b-sides set

Indie cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls have lined up a short spring tour behind "No, Virginia," the pair's forthcoming b-sides and rarities release.

The Boston duo--pianist Amanda Palmer and drummer Brian Viglione--will kick off the run May 18 in San Francisco, hitting 10 cities on the trek. The band has also lined up a July 4 slot at Rothbury, MI's Rothbury Festival.

In addition to the spring push behind the new record, Palmer has a pair of June dates scheduled in Boston performing in front of the Boston Pops Orchestra, while Viglione has dates planned with Steve Smith of Dirty Vegas and his ongoing side project, indie trio Major General. Check the Dolls' website for more information on solo dates.

In addition to b-sides and rarities, "No, Virginia"--set to hit stores May 20--features new recordings of some of the band's older songs, according to a press release.

The set follows the pair's second album, the 2006 effort "Yes, Virginia," which was produced by Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Pixies). The disc debuted at No. 42 on The Billboard 200 chart and received generally favorable reviews from critics.

Palmer, meanwhile, has set a tentative September release date for her first solo album, "Who Killed Amanda Palmer," which boasts production from singer/songwriter Ben Folds, who also performs on the album.

"A lot of the songs are piano ballads that never found a home on a Dolls record, because I hadn't wanted to overload the record with slow material," she told the Boston Phoenix newspaper last year. "But there's a really intense, exciting energy to the tracks at the same time. It definitely won't drag."
