Toadies hop around US this summer

The Toadies ' heretofore slow-burn reunion will catch fire this summer when the rockers hit the tour trail for a series of shows well outside of their Texas stomping grounds.

So far, the group has mapped a batch of late-June shows that begin with a pair of dates in the Lone Star State and a one-off Atlanta performance, after which they'll head up the East Coast for engagements in New York City, Philadelphia, the Boston area and Washington, DC. The Northeast Corridor appearances mark the group's first live work in the region since its 2001 breakup.

"Texas summers are so darn hot we are heading North to NYC," the group wrote in a recent blog entry posted at its MySpace page. "Get your tickets now, these shows will sell out."

More concert dates are expected, as the group, after last week announcing that its June 21 show in its hometown of Ft. Worth, TX, had sold out, assured fans that "there will be more chances for you to catch the Toadies in DFW this year. Stay tuned."

The Toadies rose to fame in the midst of the grunge era with their 1994 Interscope debut, "Rubberneck." The set spawned several hits, including "Possum Kingdom," "Away," "Tyler" and "I Come from the Water." Interscope reportedly spiked the band's planned 1998 follow-up, which the group eventually reworked for release in 2001 under the title "Hell Below/Stars Above." Five months after that album hit the street, frontman Todd Lewis announced that the group was breaking up, and cited bassist Lisa Umbarger's departure from the lineup as the catalyst for the split.

The band--sans Umbarger, who remains detached from the group--eventually played a handful of well-received reunion shows in Texas between 2005 and 2007.

"The fan response really surprised us all," guitarist Mark Vogeler said in the group's online bio. "I had no idea that people would show up in the numbers that they did. Clearly, people still wanna see a Toadies show.”"

"After the first show, we started getting more offers for the Toads," Lewis added. "I like to work. A lot. So we did a few more shows during my time off from [post-Toadies project] the Burden Brothers. They turned out to be a gas."

The group's performance at 2007's St. Patrick's Day parade in Dallas surfaced later in the year in the form of a live album titled "Rock Show," and Lewis has left the door open to a possible new studio album, according to the band's online bio.

"The stars have lined up for a few more shows now," he said. "Expect lots of rock. And maybe even new Toadies releases in the future. Whether that involves putting out some unreleased archival stuff, or even recording new material ... who knows?"
