Nine Inch Nails pump out more free music

Free agency apparently agrees with Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor, who recently parted with his record label and has since been dishing out a voluminous amount of material, the latest installment of which surfaced yesterday (4/22).

Late last night, Reznor posted at NIN's website a new single titled "Discipline."

"Some of you may have heard a new Nine Inch Nails track on your radio today," Reznor wrote in a message to fans. "You can download your own copy of the track right here right now for free. Take your shirt off and dance to it! Remix it! Enjoy."

The remix suggestion alludes to the website Reznor launched earlier this year, where fans are encouraged to download multi-track files of NIN songs, remix the original versions and upload the results, which are then streamed on the site's audio player. Reznor's own remixes run alongside the fan contributions, and every track on the site is available as a free MP3 download.

"Discipline" surfaces just a few weeks after Reznor surprised fans with "Ghosts I-IV," a four-album instrumental set that he posted online late one Sunday night in early March. The first nine cuts from the 36-track collection are free, while the entire set is available in a variety of different forms, including a $300 deluxe, limited-edition version that sold out inside of 48 hours.

"We're considering a real-time live webcast of me signing 2,500 copies of the just-arrived, super-ultra-mega-deluxe 'Ghosts' edition all day Thursday [4/24]," Reznor wrote in last night's website message. "These really turned out great and I can't wait to sign every single one of them."

Last October, Reznor--who, throughout his career, had been famously at odds with his record labels--announced that he was no longer under contract. Since then, he has released "Y34RZ3R0R3MIX3D," an album featuring reworked cuts originally found on last April's "Year Zero"; launched the aforementioned remix site; dished out "Ghosts I-IV"; created a YouTube page through which fans can submit entries for a film festival featuring imagery set to the music of "Ghosts"; and delivered "Discipline"--a cut that might turn out to be the opening salvo of a soon-to-be released NIN album with vocals. (The "Discipline" MP3's metadata contains a note advising fans to visit NIN's website on May 5.)

Reznor first tipped the May 5 happening by posting Monday (4/21) at NIN's site a message that simply read "2 weeks." The previous time he did that, "Ghosts" surfaced two weeks later.

As previously reported, Nine Inch Nails will be hitting the road in late July for an extensive North American tour.
