Bobby Brown Gets Early Release From Jail
Bobby Brown was released from a Florida jail on Friday morning (7/7) after serving 65 days of a 75-day sentence, according to the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. Brown, who has been locked up since mid-May, had 10 days knocked off of his sentence for good behavior, the paper said.
Brown’s wife Whitney Houston and comedian Chris Rock met Brown outside of the North Broward Detention Center in Pompano Beach shortly after midnight on Friday, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Rock, who hosts his own television program on HBO, was reportedly filming a mock-vigil for Brown outside of the facility.
The singer had been jailed since May 10 for violating the terms of a suspended sentence he received in 1998 after crashing Houston’s Porsche into a road sign in Florida in 1996. Police reported that Brown’s blood-alcohol level at the time of the accident was three times the legal limit. Brown received a suspended sentence for the incident, and was under a court order to submit to regular drug testing.
Last year, Brown tested positive for cocaine during a urine test, and refused to re-take the test, prompting a Florida judge to issue a warrant for his arrest. He was subsequently arrested in a New Jersey airport in May and was transported to Florida, where he was given a 75-day jail sentence.
Brown attended a drug rehabilitation program while incarcerated, according to the Sun-Sentinel, and was released early for good behavior, which is standard for most inmates at the facility where he was being held.
"I just want to be with my family and my friends,” Brown told the paper following his release. “I'm going home to spend the summer with my kids and work on my life."
