Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra hits the road
The band will kick things off June 20 in Ottawa and visit more than a dozen theaters and jazz festivals across Canada and the western US through mid-July. Details are listed below.
On tour, the 15-member Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, which usually operates out of the venerable New York City performing arts theater, will perform a vast repertoire, including everything from historic compositions to recently commissioned works to arrangements made famous by composers including John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk.
In addition to serving as the official house orchestra for Jazz at Lincoln Center for more 12 years, the JLCO has toured to upwards of 300 cities in more than 35 countries on six continents, according to its MySpace page.
The group has also released a dozen albums, including its most recent, "Congo Square," which is a two-disc musical tribute to New Orleans written by Marsalis and Ghanaian drum master Yacub Addy. Last month, "Congo Square" was also released as a DVD, capturing JLCO performing with an African percussion ensemble in a two-hour concert filmed at the 2007 Montreal Jazz Festival. A few songs from the set are streaming at JLCO's MySpace page.
