Nickelback jumps on the Live Nation wagon
Canadian rock band Nickelback has become the latest act to sign an all-encompassing deal with entertainment giant Live Nation.
The partnership, reported to be worth between $50 million and $70 million, covers all areas of the band's global music enterprises for three touring and album cycles, with an option for a fourth. It includes rights to touring, recorded music, merchandise, sponsorships, fan club, website, broadcast and other areas, according to a press release.
As for the recorded-music rights, Live Nation will have to wait for Nickelback to complete its Road Runner Records contract, which has two albums and a greatest-hits package left to go, according to Reuters.
"Our relationship with everyone at Road Runner Records has been amazing throughout our career and we look forward to continuing that same great relationship for the remainder of our recording commitment with them," Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger said in a statement. "With that said, the Live Nation deal helps us maximize the band's opportunities in all areas of our career. We are extremely confident that Live Nation's complete global team is the world's finest and we are excited to be a part of the Live Nation vision and future!"
Nickelback, which has a European tour scheduled in September, is expected to book a run of Live Nation amphitheaters beginning next year, according to Billboard.
The band continues to support its 2005 set, "All the Right Reasons," which topped The Billboard 200 chart and has gone on to sell more than 10 million copies worldwide, according to a press release. The record has spawned a host of hit singles, including "Photograph," "Animals," "Savin' Me," "Rockstar," "Far Away," "If Everyone Cared" and "Side of a Bullet."
Nickelback's 2006/2007 tour, which visited North America and Australia, sold more than 1.5 million tickets and grossed in excess of $67 million, according to Live Nation.
Since the conglomerate launched its artists division last year, it has signed Madonna, Jay-Z and Shakira to so-called "360" deals. A less-extensive agreement with U2 reportedly is also in the works, and is expected to be completed in the coming months.
