Widespread Panic maps fall leg for 'Free'

Jam-rockers Widespread Panic , fresh off a 20-plus-city summer tour, have lined up a run of mostly headlining dates for later in the year.

The Athens, GA-based band kicks off the fall run with a pair of shows in Austin, TX, beginning Oct. 10 and will hit 12 cities through early November. Prior to the fall leg, the group will complete a pair of outdoor festival commitments this summer. First up: an Aug. 24 slot at San Francisco's Outside Lands Fest. The itinerary is included below.

Widespread Panic continues to support "Free Somehow," its 10th studio album and the follow-up to 2006's "Earth to America." The new disc was recorded in Nassau, Bahamas, and produced by legendary studio presence Terry Manning (ZZ Top, Jimmy Buffett), who also produced the band's previous LP.

The set, which hit stores in February, is the group's first release with new guitarist Jimmy Herring, who replaced George McConnell last fall. McConnell had joined Panic following the 2002 cancer death of founding member Michael Houser.

Widespread Panic also recently released "Driving Songs Vol. II," which is available exclusively at its download website. That set, available in download and CD formats, features 33 songs--one from each stop on the band's fall 2007 tour. Tunes include covers of Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" and Metallica's "Enter Sandman."

In September, the band will be inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, joining past inductees including Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, R.E.M. and the Allman Brothers Band, among other state luminaries.

"Sharing this honor ... with so many of our greatest musical influences, is something I'm sure none of the band members imagined when we first started making music together," said the group's lead singer, John Bell, in a press statement. "September 20th is going to be a truly special day for the entire Widespread Panic Family."
