Ingrid Michaelson aids cancer research with 'Be OK'

Indie-pop singer/pianist Ingrid Michaelson has assembled a fall outing to support her forthcoming EP, "Be OK," which will benefit cancer research.

Michaelson has a few US dates over the next month, including a New York City gig opening for the Dave Matthews Band's "Stand Up for a Cure" concert, and she'll head to Europe in mid-September to support Jason Mraz. Her "Be OK" trek is set to launch Oct. 29 in her hometown of Staten Island, NY, and visit clubs and theaters across the US through late November. North American shows are listed below and those overseas can be found at Michaelson's website.

"Be OK"--an 11-track collection of previously unreleased songs, covers, and live recordings--is scheduled to be released Oct. 14 on Michaelson's own Cabin 24 Records label. A portion of the proceeds will go to Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), an initiative aimed at raising funds to accelerate cancer research.

"Being one of millions with a close connection to cancer, I know I need to do my part," Michaelson said in a statement.

The record's title track and companion video will be featured at SU2C's website as part of the Stand Up To Cancer television special that will air simultaneously and commercial-free Sept. 5 on the ABC, CBS and NBC networks. The song will be available for download at Apple's iTunes store beginning Sept. 2.

Michaelson will further her SU2C fundraising efforts with a "Be OK" necklace that she personally designed, and will sell online and at all stops on her tour.

The independent performer found mainstream success when her 2006 sophomore album, "Girls and Boys," drew the attention of the music supervisor for ABC-TV's hit drama "Grey's Anatomy." Several tracks from the set were used in episodes of the show, including the 2006 season finale. Michaelson's big hit, "The Way I Am," also got a push as the soundtrack behind an Old Navy commercial. That song and a few others from the record are streaming at her MySpace page.

Last March, "Girls and Boys" reached No. 63 on The Billboard 200--quite a feat for an artist who remains independent. To date, the album has sold more than 230,000 copies while the single "The Way I Am" has moved upwards of 710,000 digital downloads, according to a press release.

Michaelson has also been getting her share of exposure on the talk-show circuit. She's scheduled to appear Sept. 2 on NBC-TV's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."
