Alejandro Escovedo plays for Dems, maps tour

Singer/songwriter Alejandro Escovedo , fresh off an appearance at the Democratic National Convention, has mapped out a slate of fall concert dates.

Escovedo--who appeared Tuesday night (8/26) at the Democrats' big party in Denver, performing "People (We're Only Gonna Live So Long)" from his latest album, "Real Animal"--kicks off the outing Sept. 8 in Solana Beach, CA.

The schedule consists mostly of headlining dates, with a short stretch of shows with Los Lonely Boys near the end of September. Escovedo is also scheduled to appear at a benefit concert today (8/28) in Austin, TX. Details are below.

"Real Animal," which hit stores in June, features 13 tracks and was produced by legendary studio hand Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T Rex). "The inspiration for this record really is my life in music and the characters that I've known in and throughout that life. It's also about how music helped me survive that life," Escovedo said in a press statement.

"There's very much a feeling of 'now' on this album: this is where Alejandro Escovedo is today," Visconti said in a press release. "I think he's laid his demons to rest. He's had kind of a tragic life and he could be a lot more negative about things, but he's absolutely radiant now."

The set follows 2006's "The Boxing Mirror," which was produced by The Velvet Underground's John Cale and, at the time, represented Escovedo's first album of new material in six years, a period during which the performer engaged in a life-or-death struggle with the blood disease Hepatitis-C much of the time. Doctors pronounced him free of the disease in 2005.

Escovedo, who boasts three percussionists in his family--brothers Coke and Pete Escovedo and niece (and famous Prince collaborator) Sheila E.--began his musical career in the late '70s as a member of San Francisco punk progenitors The Nuns. He helped found groundbreaking cow-punk act Rank and File in the '80s before beginning his own solo career.
