Brazilian Girls take dance party cross-country
Electro-pop outfit Brazilian Girls will showcase material from its new album during a brief North American run that launches later this month.
The group (only one member of which is a girl and none Brazilian) will start with several late-September gigs around California and then head for the East Coast, hitting the Canadian cities of Toronto and Montreal along the way. The 12-show itinerary is included below.
Brazilian Girls released their third full-length album, "New York City," in late July and landed at No. 8 on Billboard's Top Electronic Albums chart. The set, named after their hometown, is the result of nearly eight months worth of work, unlike the band's 2006 effort, "Talk to La Bomb."
"The pace of recording on our last album was really frenetic," singer Sabina Sciubba explained in the band's bio. "And we never wanna do the same thing twice. So for this one, we decided to really take our time with the writing and recording. We all calmed down a little bit, and we didn't rush anything."
The eclectic album features a good share of the band's signature up-tempo party starters, but also reveals a deeper more contemplative side of the Brazilian Girls, one that drummer Aaron Johnston said reflects the group's desire to "actually sit down and write rather than just jam at the club." Several tracks from "New York City" are streaming at the Brazilian Girls' MySpace page.
Sciubba, who grew up in Nice and Munich, sings in no less than five different languages, according to All Music Guide. She met her bandmates--Johnston, keyboardist Didi Gutman and bassist Jesse Murphy--in 2003 while jamming at a New York dance club. Murphy is currently on hiatus from the group.
