Pendulum takes electronic music live
The title of Pendulum 's album "In Silico" makes pretty clear what the listener is going to get.
"'In Silico,' it means 'born from machine,'" vocalist/producer Rob Swire said in an interview with LiveDaily. "Even though it uses more live instruments than the last album, everything went through the process of being torn apart by the computer and reassembled in a sequencer. It was kind of artificially made and that's how we chose the name."
On Oct. 1, the UK-based electronic-tinged hard rock band will head out on its first tour of North America, kicking off the jaunt in Boston and wrapping it up Oct. 26 at the CMJ festival. Swire had a simple statement for fans wanting to know what they should expect from the headlining run.
"Electronic music actually played live--which doesn't happen a hell of a lot these days," Swire said.
Pendulum, which only hit the US once in 2008 to play Coachella, formed in its hometown of Perth, Australia, in 2002, when producers Swire and Gareth McGrillen teamed up with local DJ Paul "Elhornet" Harding. Their individual roots ranged from producing drum-and-bass, breakbeat and hardcore, to playing in metal and punk bands, and their debut album, "Hold Your Colour," sold more than 100,000 copies.
"The drummer [singular-monikered Kodish] is from North London and the guitarist [Perry ap Gwynedd] is from Wales. I met the other two guys back in Perth, Australia, when they were DJing around Perth and I had been making tracks for awhile. I kept giving them a few tracks and eventually we started making tracks together. I started DJing as well as for a short while and we decided to move to England."
Swire said the group moved to London to further improve sales and visibility. That's when the challenge came to play live.
"When we started out, we weren't expecting to have to do it live," Swire said. "We've always been very studio-based and then the live thing was sort of thrown in [as] an extra challenge onto that. I really don't personally like DJing that much. Playing live was really the only way I would get to playing in front of an audience. So it had to be done.
"Me and Gareth and Paul and all the guys in the band, we'd all been in bands before Pendulum as well," Swire said. "Playing live sort of came a bit naturally, but with all the technology we were using in Pendulum, it was a bit nerve wracking that something might go wrong. We run nine computers on stage, so if one of those crashes, we were in some trouble. Once we got over the technological hurdle, it was all good."
