Album Review: Marc Broussard, "Keep Coming Back" (Atlantic)
Marc Broussard 's Atlantic debut, "Keep Coming Back," is a potent funk, R&B, blues and country fusion that celebrates the raw soul and energy of his live performances.
A primary goal for the record was to effectively convey the vibe of Broussard's shows, and thus, all 12 tracks were recorded on analog only. Further feeding the idea of pure spontaneity is the fact that the band didn't play any of the songs until they were in the studio. The entire project was completed in a head-spinning timeframe of 11 days.
Twenty-six-year-old Broussard posses the soulful baritone pipes and honest delivery of a musician at least twice his age: think Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Stevie Wonder and Otis Redding. The Louisiana native naturally transitions from smooth R&B tunes to uplifting gospel-style hymns to swamp rock and heartbreaking piano ballads--making it all sound equally authentic and effortless.
With the help of two female artists, Broussard's gritty, carefree force gets some softer touches. Billboard chart-topping singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles provides vocal support on the Maroon 5-like funky jam "Why Should She Wait." Country/pop star LeAnn Rimes is featured on "When It's Good." Together, Broussard and Rimes make this a simple, but perfectly feel-good love duet. The record doesn't get any closer to sounding like an actual gig than it does on "Evangeline Rose," a powerful, beautiful acoustic song.
Much of the album focuses on ego and relationships, making "Power's in the People" a more unique and rousing track. It's a hopeful request for mankind to unite and find strength in numbers in this dog-eat-dog world. Joyfully hand-clapping, Broussard and his choir rally and sing: "We've got to fight, fight, fight to survive."
Calculation and perfection weren't the objective here, thus "Keep Coming Back" signifies a mission-accomplished attitude with its fun, whole-hearted approach. Broussard spans a variety of genres and styles, but not once does he sound anything less than a master of every domain.
