Metallica [ tickets ], Run-D.M.C. [ tickets ] and The Stooges [ tickets ] are among the short list of nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year.

The three acts--representing heavy metal, crossover hip-hop and Detroit garage rock--lead a diverse field of possible inductees that also includes legendary guitarist Jeff Beck [ tickets ], disco supergroup Chic [ tickets ], R&B singer Bobby Womack [ tickets ], soul/doo-wop group Little Anthony & the Imperials [ tickets ], funk/rock ensemble War [ tickets ] and pioneering rock-and-roll singer Wanda Jackson [ tickets ].

Five of the nine nominees will be inducted into the Rock Hall next April at the institution's 24th annual induction ceremony in Cleveland. For the first time, tickets for the ceremony will be made available to members of the general public. See the Hall's website for further information.

The inductees are chosen by the voters of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, which counts more than 500 members among its club. To be eligible for nomination into the Rock Hall, an act must have released its first recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. Nominees for next year's induction must have appeared on the scene no later than 1983, according to the Hall's rules.

Madonna, John Mellencamp, Leonard Cohen, The Ventures and The Dave Clark Five were inducted into the Rock Hall earlier this year.
