Chris Botti takes up residency in NYC
Contemporary-jazz/pop trumpeter Chris Botti has further expanded his non-stop tour schedule to include a 12-night residency in New York City.
The performer, who's been traveling the world all year to support his latest album, "Italia," continues tomorrow (9/26) in Saratoga, CA. Early next month, he'll head to Europe for a week and then return to the US for a string of coast-to-coast dates that stretch well into next year. The Big Apple residency is scheduled to kick off just before Christmas and runs into the first week of January. North American shows are listed below and those overseas can be found at Botti's website.
The Oregon-raised musician spends so much time on the road, he basically considers himself homeless.
"I don't live anywhere," Botti said in his bio. "I have no storage locker. Every single possession I own fits in one suitcase, one carry-on and there's my trumpet. But I feel unbelievably lucky that I have an opportunity to be on the road 365 days a year."
"Italia," which surfaced last December, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Jazz Albums chart and earned a Grammy nomination for best Pop Instrumental Album. The set, which features guest vocalists including Andrea Bocelli and Paula Cole, was inspired by the romance of Italy.
"It really is a beautiful kind of love letter to Italy expressing the longing of someone who's not there," Botti said. "Italy has a romantic quality about it even for someone who's never been there ... the food, the fashion, the art, the landscape, the way the people live their life."
Earlier this month, Botti took his love letter to Beantown for his debut with the Boston Pops. Two concerts, featuring guest stars including Sting, Josh Groban, Steven Tyler and Yo-Yo Ma, were filmed for broadcast next spring on PBS-TV's annual pledge drive. Sony plans to release a CD of the performance in December and a DVD in April, according to The Associated Press.
