Album Review: Portugal. The Man, "Censored Colors" (Equal Vision)
Swirling together the vinyl-rotation days of unapologetic '70s rock, jazzy blues and brotherly-love folk, Portugal. The Man delivers a catchy collection of vintage sounds on their third full-length album, "Censored Colors."
Whether strumming earthy acoustic riffs backed by gentle strings and falsetto vocals ("Created") or saxophone slurs and soulful echoes ("New Orleans"), the Alaskan quartet makes a deliberate experimental and retro-minded attack. The opening track, "Lay Me Back Down," sets the record's tone with its Man Man-like trunk of noise tricks and unpredictable antics. "Out And In And In And Out" is unmistakably reminiscent of "Led Zeppelin III," but then so is the swanky choral rock of "Hard Times" and the endless rise-and-fall encore-spirit of "Sit Back and Dream."
With its bleak croons, snaps and jangles, "All Mine" has Black Rebel Motorcycle Club attitude with a dash of quirky piano chords. And even though there is a song titled "1989," it seems more like an ode to a decade prior with its rich symphonic clusters, spacey effects and uplifting, full-force, T. Rex-style vocals. "Colors" certainly upholds the hippie-era of trippy and deep ponderings, and it is one of the most effective tracks. "I'm not afraid to die/Cause all these colors will change," the group sings in wholehearted harmony.
Confident and rousing as it is, "Censored Colors" winds up being more like a grab-bag of music's greatest past players rather than anything truly novel. Despite this, Portugal. The Man brings enough enthusiasm and spontaneity to make these 15 tracks more than a worthwhile listen.
