With a headlining tour behind his new album well underway, Ben Folds [ tickets ] has come up with a plan to help fans that can't see him play live this fall still hear his performances.

The singer/songwriter, who continues the trek tonight (10/3) in Fort Wayne, IN, will record one track in each of 10 different cities on the outing, and then release the result the next day via Apple's iTunes Music Store.

According to a press release, "tracks are recorded to a Mac, previewed on an iPod, original cover art is made by Folds with Apple's Photo Booth application and sent to iTunes for sale the next day." A complete live album containing all 10 songs will be assembled at the end of the tour and sold exclusively through the online retailer.

Folds is supporting his latest studio set, "Way to Normal." Released late last month, the album was produced by Dennis Herring (Elvis Costello, Modest Mouse) and features Folds on vocals and piano with bassist Jared Reynolds and drummer Sam Smith. Guest vocalist Regina Spektor appears on the album's first single, "You Don't Know Me."

The performer intentionally leaked an incomplete version of "Way to Normal" to the Internet in July. The leak consisted of alternate versions of some legitimate songs from the new album along with several uncharacteristically melodramatic tracks. Although Folds' fans argued among themselves online as to the veracity of the leak, the singer/pianist admitted during an interview with Australia's Triple J Radio that he had leaked the fake version of the album as a joke on fans.
