Success creeping up on Locksley
The song "Why Not Me" has earned unsigned Brooklyn-based rockers Locksley heavy airplay on a variety of MTV programs, but the group is taking it all in stride.
"We're still kind of trying to keep it as much in perspective as possible," lead guitarist/vocalist said Kai Kennedy during a recent interview with LiveDaily. "I think some of our hard work is starting to pay off, to some extent. But it spurs us on to work even harder. We're not patting ourselves on the back too much yet."
Kennedy--who is joined in the band by lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist Jesse Laz, bassist/vocalist Jordan Laz and drummer Sam Bair--admitted the success of "Why Not Me" has "snuck up on us."
"When we first wrote it--Jesse was the main writer on it--it was half as fast as it is now," said Kennedy, calling from the band's rehearsal space. "It wasn't really working out. Have you ever seen that movie 'That Thing You Do'? You know how when they're playing that hit song really slowly the one guy walks in and says it has to be way faster? That's the same thing that happened. I don't think when it was first getting written that we really realized it was going to be even a good song at all, but it turned out pretty well."
The song appears on the album "Don't Make Me Wait," a collection that was re-released Sept. 9 with new artwork and a pair of new songs: "Only a Girl" and "Safely from the City." The name of the album is meant to convey a sense of urgency.
"That's what the entire album's about," he said. "It's about just going for it."
This fall, the politically active band, which has 20 songs written for a new album, will support MTV by headlining its "Choose or Lose" campaign. Joining them are The Hymns, whom Kennedy described as "The Band meets the Flying Burrito Brothers with The Strokes thrown in."
"All of [the members of Locksley] are registered voters and we've all done volunteer work for different political candidates over the years ...," Kennedy said. "We all try to keep up as much as possible with what's going on in American politics and somewhat with foreign politics as well.
"It's just I think it would be criminal to not be as informed as possible in a country like America and at a time like this when to be informed is as easy as clicking your mouse. I think all of us took it upon our shoulders to make sure we know what's going on. If you don't know what's going on, then you're ripe for being blind-sided. None of us want to be blind-sided."
Kennedy didn't specify which candidate he's rooting for, and simply said that "it'll be interesting to see what'll go down on the fourth.
"I think it's one of the more exciting [elections] in quite some time," he said. "We have a great chance at turning the country around. Whoever does it, something's going to happen."
