Polysics surf new wave in America

Japanese synth-punks Polysics are on their way back to North America for a co-headlining jaunt with indie-rock trio Jaguar Love.

The tour, which also features special guest Black Gold, is set to launch Oct. 18 in West Hollywood, CA, and hit 20 clubs across the US and into Canada through mid-November. Details are included below.

Polysics recently toured America opening for Hellogoodbye and Say Anything, and wrapped a European outing last month. The group is supporting its latest MySpace Records release, "We Ate the Machine," which surfaced in late September. A vinyl double-LP comprising "Karate House" (an older record never released in the US) and "We Ate the Machine" is also available.

Formed more than 10 years ago, Polysics have released a half-dozen full-length albums and they hooked up with MySpace Records last year to put out their definitive compilation, "Polysics Or Die!!!! Vista," which became their best-selling US effort to date.

The bandmates--Hiro (vocals, guitar, programming), Kayo (synthesizer, vocals), Fumi (bass) and Yano (drums)--are influenced by forward-thinking new-wavers Devo; while Hiro was in high school, he was inspired to form his own band after listening to the avant-garde sounds of the Akron, OH-based band.

"I was shocked by it," Hiro said of his first experience with Devo. "I thought it was so much more punk than just acting like a gang by greasing one's hair. I was so impressed and I thought, 'I want to do new-wave punk dressed in a jumpsuit like Devo!'"

Polysics are now considered to be on the forefront of the Tokyo new wave scene, according to the band's bio.

Indie-rock trio Jaguar Love is supporting its August debut, "Take Me To The Sea," which reached No. 34 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart. The group comprises vocalist/pianist Johnny Whitney and guitarist/bassist Cody Votolato from Seattle band Blood Brothers, and keyboardist/bassist/drummer Jay Clark from Pretty Girls Make Graves.
