Over the Rhine plan holiday, anniversary celebrations

Alt-pop duo Over the Rhine will celebrate 20 years of existence later this year with a run of fall dates leading into a three-day "holiday celebration" in the band's hometown.

The Ohio act--which revolves around permanent members Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler--kicks off the outing Nov. 7 in Greensboro, NC, with dates on the duo's "Christmas Tour" running up to the Dec. 19-21 anniversary celebration in and around Cincinnati.

The first of the three Cincy shows will feature music from the band's first decade, the second show music from the band's second decade, and the final show will be a daytime affair in nearby suburban Norwood, OH, featuring food and wine and a special acoustic performance by the duo. Details are included below.

"Almost 20 years, it's just sort of hard to take in," said Detweiler on the band's website. "There are days when we feel utterly blessed and charmed. That this labor of love could continue for 20 years, that our audience still continues to grow, that this music continues to get spread around by people who are often in the process of becoming life long friends--it all smacks of the miraculous."

Originally a quartet, the group, which formed in the late '80s, now features Berquist and Linford supplemented by touring musicians on the road and in the studio. The band released its debut album, "Till We Have Faces," in 1991, and issued a steady stream on the I.R.S. and Virgin record labels over the following decade-and-a-half before returning to its indie roots with last year's "The Trumpet Child."

Over the Rhine has released two Christmas album: 1996's "The Darkest Night of the Year," which featured a mix of original songs and the band's take on traditional holiday material, and 2006's "Snow Angels," which is comprised almost entirely of original songs.
