The Beatles headed to videogame consoles
The music of The Beatles is poised to enter the world of gaming, according to makers of the popular "Rock Band" videogame.
In a press release issued today (10/30), "Rock Band" developer Harmonix, MTV Games and the Beatles' Apple Corps Ltd. announced an exclusive partnership that will yield a videogame featuring The Beatles' entire catalog.
No specific release date for the game has been announced (though it is expected to surface sometime in late 2009), and details on what the actual gameplay will entail are slim and vague.
"[The] game will be an unprecedented, experiential progression through and celebration of the music and artistry of The Beatles," the game makers said in a press release. They added that the game was creatively conceived with input from surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison, and that the project "enjoys their full blessing."
"The project is a fun idea which broadens the appeal of The Beatles and their music," McCartney said in a prepared statement. "I like people having the opportunity to get to know the music from the inside out."
"It gives me great pleasure to be part of The Beatles / Apple and Harmonix / Rock Band partnership," Starr added. "The Beatles continue to evolve with the passing of time and how wonderful that The Beatles' legacy will find its natural progression into the 21st century through the computerized world we live in. Let the games commence."
"It's cool," Ono said. "I love it and hope it will keep inspiring and encouraging the young generation for many decades."
"People are having so much fun playing Rock Band," Harrison said. "Combined with The Beatles tracks, it is a great way to either listen or participate. If you like the music, it doesn't take much persuasion to get you to play."
Giles Martin, co-producer of the Las Vegas production "The Beatles Love by Cirque du Soleil," will serve as the game's music producer.
