Rob Zombie happy to keep White Zombie in the past
When Rob Zombie was sifting through material for a White Zombie retrospective, he found it apropos to name his former band's career-ending collection "Let Sleeping Corpses Lie."
"There [were] two titles I had in mind and that one went out," Zombie said during a recent teleconference. "It's pretty self-explanatory because I didn't want everybody to think the box set was the beginning of something. I wanted everyone to realize it was the end of something. So this is such a perfect title."
The four-CD/one-DVD box set, which hit stores Nov. 25, brings together, for the first time, all of the band's 64 original studio recordings during its 1985-1996 tenure. The DVD offers nine music videos, 10 live performances and some hidden gems.
Although the project didn't bring any tears to his eyes, Zombie did say that it made him appreciate his new solo band--guitarist John5, drummer Tommy Clufetos and bassist Piggy D.--even more "because going back and putting the White Zombie box set together brought up a lot of things that I had forgotten about. Unfortunately, some of it was negative.
"So, you know, you really appreciate when you are in a good situation with a good group of musicians and a good group of guys, and that it took 20-something years, but I feel like I finally found the three perfect people to work with."
As for his solo career, Zombie is working on an as-yet untitled album with his aforementioned bandmates. The unique thing about this album, he said, is he is recording with a band for the first time since White Zombie broke up, "in the sense that these are the guys that I tour with, that I hang out with."
"We are a band and we record as a band," Zombie said. "So the record--it's hard to describe how music is different to someone if you haven't heard it yet or whatever, but--it's just got a much more solid vibe and it's just going to be a much more intricate, interesting record, I think, just due to the fact that we have four people that are in the room all the time, contributing and working. For me, it's great."
While fans await the new material, there is a new song out there. Zombie recorded "War Zone," the first single from the soundtrack to the movie "The Punisher: War Zone." The track, written for the film, is the first new music in three years from Zombie. Upon its release, it was the No. 1 Most Added single at Active Rock Radio.
Zombie said he received the call from the "War Zone" folks while in the midst of writing his album. Because there was plenty of time before the deadline, he was able to write an original song, he explained.
"I haven't seen the movie yet, so it wasn't based on me watching the movie. They gave me the script, so I knew what it was about, and just sort of got in there and cranked it out. I figured, it was obvious; I knew the vibe of the movie. So I tried to incorporate that into the song.
"But I was happy to have that come up, because what it really did, it was a nice kick in the ass, too. We've been recording, but we really haven't finished any songs yet. We had all those songs kind of half finished. And that was a good kick in the ass to actually have to finish a song. And that really became the domino effect of finishing all, start to finish, the songs for the record, actually. So it worked out good."
