Il Divo makes 'Promise' to American fans

Operatic pop quartet Il Divo is back with a new album and a world tour that is scheduled to pass through North America next spring.

The 2009 "An Evening with Il Divo" jaunt will start in Europe in late February and wind its way to the Great White North in late April. The month-long North American leg (listed below) covers Canadian provinces from coast to coast and a half-dozen cities in the eastern US. Il Divo plans to wrap the year with performances in Australia, Japan and Southeast Asia, according to a press release.

The new show will be staged and choreographed by William Baker (Kylie, Jamiroquai) with a tour wardrobe designed by Giorgio Armani. There will be no opening act, and Il Divo is expected to perform for about 90 minutes with a 20-minute intermission, according to a press release. The concert will feature new material and repertoire from the group's five albums, including "The Promise," which surfaced in the US last month.

"The Promise" debuted at No. 1 in five countries and entered the US album chart at No. 5. The set features versions of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "The Power of Love," Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and ABBA's "Winner Takes It All."

The new album comes after a nearly year-long break that followed three years of non-stop work. Since being brought together in 2004 by Simon Cowell of "American Idol" fame, American tenor David Miller, French pop singer Sebastien Izambard, Swiss tenor Urs Buhler and Spanish baritone Carlos Marin have traveled all over the world.

"We felt calling the album 'The Promise' really echoed our sentiments about making a pledge to our fans, by taking a break and promising to return with an album better than any we have before," Izambard said in a statement.

Miller added that the goal was to approach the new recording with fresh ears and fresh spirits.

"We've still got all the cannons and fireworks, but there is more range, different dynamics, more light and shade, more color," he explained. "It's a more complete album."

The handsome, "popera" quartet currently has fans swooning on the publicity trail, and is slated to appear this month on US televisions shows including "Live with Regis & Kelly" and "Good Morning America." Details are available at Il Divo's website.
