Grammy nominations pile up for Lil Wayne, Coldplay
Ubiquitous rapper Lil Wayne topped the Grammy nominations list Wednesday (12/3) with eight nods, while British pop-rockers Coldplay hauled in seven.
Other multiple nominees include Jay-Z, Ne-Yo and Kanye West with six; Alison Krauss, John Mayer, Robert Plant, Radiohead and Jazmine Sullivan with five; and Adele, Danger Mouse, Eagles, Lupe Fiasco, George Strait and T.I., who each received four noms.
"British invasion" is the theme for Record of the Year as four Brits--Adele, Coldplay, Leona Lewis and M.I.A.--make the list, as does English rocker Robert Plant, who is paired with Alison Krauss. Those contending for the Album of the Year prize are diverse, including Coldplay, Lil Wayne, Ne-Yo, Plant and Krauss, and Radiohead.
For the first time, nominations for the annual Grammy Awards were announced on prime-time television as part of "The Grammy Nominations Concert Live!!--Countdown to Music's Biggest Night." Traditionally, the nominations are presented during an early morning press conference in order to take advantage of morning television. Instead, this year, the one-hour special featured past Grammy winners and nominees reading nominations in several categories, as well as performing songs from the Grammy Hall of Fame. Performers included Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Foo Fighters, B.B. King with John Mayer, Christina Aguilera and Taylor Swift.
The television event was hosted by Swift and rapper LL Cool J, and broadcast from the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live.
The 51st Annual Grammy Awards will be held Feb. 8 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, and will be broadcast live CBS-TV.
Nominees in select categories are below, and the compete list of nominees is on the Grammy Awards website. Nominations were for recordings released during the eligibility year Oct. 1, 2007 through Sept. 30, 2008.
